Sun’s Out? Sunglasses On! Essential Eye Care and Safety Tips

Closeup of a young man carrying a beautiful woman on his back. They both wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from UV damage as they enjoy the summer day.

Summer means more sunshine and more time outdoors, and that comes with a higher risk of sun damage to the eyes. While most people remember to apply sunscreen, far fewer take the necessary steps to protect their vision from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. That’s why sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement—they’re an essential part of summer health care.

Summer Eye Safety 101: Protecting Your Eyes from UV Damage

At Eye Clinic & Aesthetics of Provo, we’re here to outline your 2025 summer guide to sun safety.

What Are UV Rays and Why Do They Matter?

UV stands for ultraviolet, a type of light energy that comes from the sun and isn’t visible to the human eye. There are three categories of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Fortunately, UVC rays are absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and don’t reach your eyes.

UVA and UVB rays, however, penetrate through clouds and the atmosphere and can reach your eyes directly.

How Do UV Rays Affect the Eyes?

Exposure to UV rays without proper protection can lead to significant eye sun damage. This includes:

  • Cataracts: A clouding of the eye’s natural lens. UV light can cause proteins in the lens to clump together, making it difficult to see clearly. Cataracts can interfere with night vision, distort colors, and make reading uncomfortable. They can’t be reversed—only removed surgically.

  • Photokeratitis: Essentially a sunburn on the cornea, this condition is painful, temporary, and can cause redness, blurred vision, and light sensitivity.

  • Macular degeneration and retinal damage: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to degeneration of the retina, impacting central vision and possibly leading to permanent vision loss.

These conditions make it clear that UV eye protection is vital year-round, but especially during summer when UV exposure is strongest.

What to Look for in Protective Sunglasses

When shopping for sunglasses, style is important—but not at the expense of eye safety. Look for sunglasses labeled with UV 400, which means they block all light rays up to 400 nanometers, including 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. This is your best defense against sun damage to your eyes.

In addition to UV protection, sunglasses should block 75% to 90% of visible light to reduce glare and eye strain in bright environments. Glare can not only cause discomfort and eye pain but can also be dangerous while driving or enjoying outdoor activities.

Polarized lenses are another great option. These lenses reduce glare that bounces off flat surfaces such as water, pavement, or snow. This makes them ideal for outdoor activities like boating, skiing, golfing, or jogging. Labels will clearly indicate if lenses are polarized.

Prescription Options for Sunglasses Safety

Those who wear corrective glasses don’t have to compromise when it comes to UV protection. There are several options that make it easy to enjoy the summer sun without risking eye sun damage:

  • Clip-on sunglasses: A cost-effective way to add UV protection without a second pair of glasses.

  • Wraparound sunglasses: Fit over existing eyewear while blocking light from the sides.

  • Prescription sunglasses: Custom-made lenses that correct vision while providing complete UV eye protection.

  • Photochromic lenses: Also called “transition lenses,” these darken automatically in sunlight and clear up indoors.

You can also consider UV-blocking contact lenses. These lenses add another layer of protection and can be worn with non-prescription sunglasses for more complete coverage.

To address leaks of light from the sides or top of your sunglasses, wear a broad-brimmed hat. This reduces peripheral exposure and enhances comfort in sunny conditions.

Long-Term Vision Health Starts with Proactive Summer Care

Eye damage caused by the sun doesn’t always show immediate symptoms. But over time, unprotected exposure adds up, increasing the risk of long-term issues. The good news? Proactive habits now can protect your future vision.

Dr. Lewis and Dr. Smith use advanced diagnostic technology to provide thorough vision exams that go beyond standard eye charts. Each appointment includes a review of your lifestyle, symptoms, and any relevant health issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, factors that can affect your overall eye health.

If you’re dealing with eye pain, dryness, or discomfort after spending time outdoors, it might be a sign that your eyes need better protection. A quick check-up can identify the problem and prevent it from becoming a larger issue.

Additional Eye Care Considerations

Summer is also the perfect time to talk about digital eye strain. Increased screen time indoors can cause its own kind of eye stress. We offer recommendations for blue light glasses, workspace adjustments, and treatments that reduce discomfort from excessive digital exposure.
